The AMIA Bombing: A Timeline

March 17, 1992 - An explosion demolishes the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, killing twenty-two people and injuring 242 others. The Islamic Jihad Organization, a Palestinian jihadist group with ties to Hezbollah and Iran, claims responsibility for the attack,

July 18, 1994 - A car bomb explodes at the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) building, a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. This attack killed eighty-five people and injured more than 300 others. The Islamic Jihad Organization claims responsibility. No one is convicted.

September, 2001- A trial begins for twenty Argentinians charged with helping to carry out the attack - fifteen of them are former police officers.

July, 2002 - The New York Times reports claims from a former Iranian intelligence officer that Iran ordered the AMIA bombing and bribed Argentina's President at the time, Carlos Menem to cover it up - explaining the lack of urgency on the case.

June, 2004- The US Treasury Department identifies a prominent Hezbollah member and two of his companies operating in the Triborder Area of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina as responsible for financing the attack.

September 2, 2004 - At the end of the three-year AMIA bombing trial, said to have been riddled with corruption and irregularities, all twenty Argentinian defendants are acquitted.

September 13, 2004- The Cristina Kirchner Administration appoints Alberto Nisman to serve as the special prosecutor of the AMIA bombing investigation.

November 2005- Argentinian prosecutors allege that the suicide bomber who drove the car bomb into the AMIA building was a Lebanese terrorist from Hezbollah.

October 25, 2006- Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman formally accuses Iranian ex-President Rafsanjanie and eight other former officials of Iran for orchestrating the AMIA bombing.

February 2013- Argentina establishes a joint "truth commission" with Iran to jointly re-investigate the 1994 AMIA bombing, drawing outrage from Argentina's Jewish community.

May 29, 2013- Nisman issues a 500 page report on Iran's intelligence and terrorist network in Latin America.

January 14, 2015- Nisman files a 289-page criminal complaint against President Kirchner and other Argentinian officials accusing them of covering up the AMIA bombing in exchange for petroleum.

January 18, 2015- Nisman is found dead in his apartment in an alleged suicide. His death occurs 12 hours before he was set to present his indictment against the President before Congress.

December 2017- An Argentinian judge indicts former President Kirchner for treason over her alleged cover up of Iran's involvement in the AMIA bombing.

July 18, 2019- Argentina officially declares Hezbollah a terrorist organization and holds it responsible for the AMIA attack.

December 2020- An Argentinian court acquits the car mechanic accused of planting the car bomb used in the 1994 attack.
