AlRawabi School for Girls

Review by: Emelie Jimenez

The short:

In the heart of Jordan, Netflix’s original series touches on issues of bullying and the impact that bullying has on young girls who attend an elite all-girls school.

The long:

When the bullied outcast, Mariam, gathers a group of outcasts to plot the perfect series of takedowns against their tormentors, they send the student body and administration into a spiral. Crossing the fragile line of haunting teenage issues, Netflix’s Jordanian show explores the impact of bullying. Common themes surrounding bullying issues cross over into the socio-political discourse of Jordanian society, forming an integral and complex layer to the series.

To watch or not to watch:

Watch! This show touches on issues relating to how some young women in the region have to negotiate the social and cultural norms that are expected of them to abide by and what are the consequences when they have gone too far. Overall, it depicts the far-reaching effects that bullying has on a young girl's self-esteem and psychological well-being. I strongly recommend if you’re a teen parent that you watch it with them due to the sensitive nature of the topics discussed.
