Gad Elmaleh: American Dream - (Netflix Comedy Special)

Review by Emma Schneck

The Short:

World famous Moroccan comedian compares life in the United States and Morocco in a hilarious stand up special.

The Long:

While mostly known for his comedy specials in French, this is one of Gad Elmaleh’s first specials in English. Having newly settled in America, he pokes fun at American customs and the experience of being a Moroccan/French immigrant living in the States.

In this high-energy routine, Gad highlights the strangeness of American work-ethic, language, passports, immigration, and more. He comments on what the image of the “American Dream” means to Moroccans, and how far-off this dream can seem to immigrants in reality.

To watch or not to watch:

Yes, definitely! This is a great, fun way to see American culture through the eyes of a Moroccan, and compare the quirks of America’s global image to its reality. Available on Netflix, this hour-long special is easily available and a really quick, light-hearted watch.
