Karkhana

Review by: Udochi Esomonu

The Short:

A Beirut-based instrumental music group of seven members hailing from large international cities like Cairo, Istanbul, and Beirut who are known for their mesh of psychedelic rock and Middle Eastern folklore.

The Long:

The members of Karkhana first met in Beirut in 2014. They then began to record live and studio-version compositions of their music for the Italian vinyl label called Sagittarius. All seven members bring their unique instrumental talent to the mix. When listening, it can be fun to spot the different instruments you hear: electric guitar, oud, trumpet, flutes, drums, and organs. All of these instruments come together to give Karkhana it’s intoxicating style and sound. I would describe their sound as a little bit of light jazz with undertones of rock.

To listen to or not to listen:

Listen! Listen! Listen! You’re probably used to listening to music with lyrics, but Karkhana’s unique instrumental ensemble brings for an energized music experience. Even without lyrics, they’re able to showcase and deliver a sound that transcends the typical definition of modern music. I recommend listening to Rock Farock and Containment to start.
