Le Cerf-Volant

Review by Hannah Jacobson

The short:

Sixteen year old Lamia is being forced to marry her cousin despite wanting to marry someone else.

The long:

Set in a village along the Lebanese-Israeli border, village elders decide that it is time for Lamia to marry her cousin, Sami, who lives on the Israeli side of the border. Lamia doesn't understand what marital relations entail and has feelings for one of the border guards. Furthermore, Lamia’s marriage means that she will likely never see her family again once she crosses into Israel.

To watch or not to watch:

Watch! This film grapples with the physical and psychological borders that separate people with artful subtlety.
