The short: An alternative Egyptian singer, songwriter, and actress who is known for her sensational music which is largely influenced by trip hop--a blend of hip hop and electronica--and psychedelic rock.

The long: Growing up with a father who was a theatre critic and a mother who was a singer and an actress, performing and creating was indeed in Maryam’s blood. In 2008, Maryam founded two bands: Jawaz Safar which means ‘passport’ and Baraka which means ‘blessings’. After spending many successful years in the music scene performing in bands, she began to pave a name for herself as a solo artist. In 2012, she released her debut album called Ana Mesh Baghanny. This twelve track album is composed of music that is personal, political, and philosophical, allowing for listeners to think deeply while enjoying her alluring vocals. Since then, she has produced three albums, various singles, and music collaborations. She works closely with Lebanese music producer Zeid Haman, which has increased Maryam’s international presence as it prompted her to tour internationally.

To listen or not to listen: LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN! Maryam Saleh’s tracks are enticing and captivating. Her use of her demanding, emotion-filled voice makes for a beautiful listening experience. But don’t only listen to her solo work, also listen to the music she has released in collaboration with Zeid Haman. Start with Ana Mesh Baghanny for her solo work and Watan El Akk and Ghaba for her work with Zeid Haman.
