The Dukkan Show

Review by Mia Veal

The Short

This podcast takes place on the stoop of a dukkan (shop) in the UAE. It is hosted by three cultural influencers OT, Reem, and Akkaoui who partake in conversations on race, legal matters, spirituality, and so much more in the context of the Arab world.

The Long

Episode 168 of the podcast tackles racism in the Arab world with Rania ElSouri a Sudanese/Eritrean/Palestinian mental health expert who examines this issue through a context of postcolonialism and radical acceptance. An enlightening conversation on how the effects of colorism are still seen, and the stereotype of African and Filipino people in the MENA region being called eamilat nazafa (maid). The show also touches upon the importance of addressing the harmful influence of colorism and featurism in the MENA region. One point in the episode that stuck with me is the intergenerational trauma from the racism experienced and how it creates a cycle of pain and internal self-harm for communities.

To listen or not to listen?

A definite listen! You can also find the series online to both watch and listen! The podcast gives a great depiction of the MENA region and specific issues within the UAE. The Dukkan Show communicates to the audience how those who live within the region are a diverse group of people who come from various backgrounds, and there is no one kind of Arab.
