The short:

This TV-mini series takes place in Israel, 1959. The Spy follows the true-life story of Eli Cohen, the Israeli spy chosen by Mossad (the Israeli Security Agency) who successfully infiltrated the highest levels of the Syrian regime throughout the 1960s.

The long:

Typically known for his raunchy comedy roles, Sacha Baron Cohen masterfully steps into the shoes of legendary Mossad Agent, Eli Cohen, in this six-part Netflix miniseries. The show follows the progression of Cohen’s career as he evolves from office clerk and family man to an invaluable asset of the Mossad; reaching new heights of espionage. As an Arab Jew, Cohen successfully posed as a wealthy Syrian businessman, Kamal Amin Thabet, and infiltrated top levels of the Syrian regime. The miniseries follows Cohen throughout the early 1960s, as he gathered vital intelligence for the Mossad in an era when tensions between Israel and Syria were at an all-time high.

Eli Cohen, a passionate and patriotic Israeli, is chosen by Mossad to gain intelligence into Syria operations. The story takes place during the years preceding the 1976 Six-Day War which occurred between Syria and Israel. Assuming the identity of Kamel Amin Thaabet, he establishes himself in the aristocratic society of Syria. Befriending people who would eventually rule over Syria, Cohen becomes appointed as the Deputy Defense Minister of Syria and becomes a close advisor to the future president Amin al-Hafiz. Played by Sacha Baron Cohen, he was nominated for Best Actor- Miniseries or Television Film at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.

To watch or not to watch:

Absolutely watch. This is one you should not miss. The Spy would be riveting even if it were fiction-- but the show’s roots in a true story will leave you in disbelief. Moreover, the acting is nothing short of impeccable

Definitely watch! The miniseries allows the viewer to understand the historical underpinnings of the tension that still exist today between the two countries through a fascinating and interesting dialogue. Although some scenes may be difficult for some to watch, the series follows one of Israel’s most renowned spies.
