Theeb

Review by Emily Shultis

The Short:

In the Ottoman Empire, a preadolescent Bedouin boy named Theeb embarks on a perilous journey through the desert, escorting a British officer to his secret destination.

The Long:

Set in 1916, Theeb lives in a remote desert location under the Ottoman Empire with his Bedouin tribe. During a period of time known as the Arab Revolt, when the Arab nationalists seeked independence from the Ottoman Empire, Theeb’s oldest brother agreed to escort a British officer across the desert who claimed he sought a well near the Ottoman train tracks. As Theeb tags along for the adventure, the events unfold through his eyes as he endures a coming of age journey.

To watch or not to watch:

This is Jordan’s first nominated film for the Oscars. Nominated for the 2016 Academy Award of Best Foreign Language film, I would extremely recommend watching this film! The detailed scenery of the unforgiving landscape along with echoes bouncing from the eerie canyons, the movie blends the beauty of the Jordanian land with the dangers that exist within.
