ASSYRIA
The Assyrian Empire was an ancient Mesopotamian kingdom, spanning from 2000 to 689 BCE. The kingdom was primarily located in modern day Iraq, Syria, and parts of Turkey. At its height it stretched past today’s Egypt, Iran, Lebanon and Israel. The Assyrian capital city of Assur had periods of influence but was long overpowered by stronger empires such as the Hittites and Babylonians. Assyria eventually emerged as a territorial state in the 14th century BCE; however, its strength fluctuated with encounters with neighboring empires and the strength of its kings. Assyrians were famous for their cruelty, battle prowess, and impressive buildings.
