FAZUGHLI

The Kingdom of Fazughli stood between what is now Sudan and Ethiopia from the early 16th to the late 17th century. A successor to the fallen Kingdom of Alodia, Fazughli retained its Christian religion and polyethnic nature at a time when the Islamicization and Arabization of Africa were progressing rapidly. Fazughli would cross paths with two of the largest powers in the region at this point in history, the Funj Sultanate and the Kingdom of Ethiopia; and its ruling class, the Hamaj, would continue to shape the region long after the kingdom was absorbed into the Funj Sultanate in 1685.
