MACEDONIA
The ancient kingdom of Macedonia, sometimes called Macedon, was located between the Mediterranean and Balkan civilizations. Under the reign of Alexander the Great in the fourth century BCE, Macedonia grew to its largest expanse. For almost 100 years, between 360 and 270 BCE, Macedonia was one of the most dynamic ancient states. A kingdom of goat herders and frontier riders went on to become the largest empire known at that time. Since the formation of the Republic of North Macedonia in 1991, Macedonians and Greeks have sparred over which country gets to claim the history of ancient Macedonia as its own.
