QAJAR

The Qajar Dynasty was an Iranian royal family with Turkic origins that ruled Persia from 1789 to 1925 before it was succeeded by the Pahlavi Dynasty; Iran’s last monarchy. Under Qajar rule, Iran unified the territories of present-day Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, yet subsequently lost them to Russian expansionism. The Qajars also sparked modern Iranian nationalism when they granted capitulations and concessions to foreign governments for access to their natural resources. The Qajar Dynasty had multiple weak rulers that failed to unify Iran as they lacked a central army, a strong bureaucracy, a taxation system, and a reliable stream of revenue.
