SYRIA
Due to Syrian Civil War that started in 2011, Syria often becomes emblematic of a country torn apart by conflict in the Middle East. Following early events of the Arab Spring, nonviolent protests erupted in Syria after Syrian police brutalized a group of teenage boys for drawing graffiti. The history of Syria is similar to Lebanon, because both countries were under the French Mandate until 1946. The civil war has left over 6 million Syrians displaced, and 5 million Syrians refugees outside the country. Today, Bashar al-Assad continues to hold on to power despite rebellions by large portions of the population.
