Cairokee

Review by: Coretta Lemaitre

The Short: An Egyptian rock band that became famous for their political lyrics and protest songs following the Egyptian revolution of 2011 and continues to release new music.

The long: Cairokee’s music style is sometimes classified as indie rock, alternative rock, or pop rock, but the band also draws on a folk style that contributes to its powerful melodies and rich timbre. When the band released "Ya El Medan," a tribute and reflection on the sacrifices of the revolution in 2011 and the meaning of Tahrir Square, the powerful song and music video jumped to the top of Youtube and Facebook’s top hits. The piece features the previously retired Egyptian singer Aida El Ayouby. The band most recently released an album in 2017, titled Noaata Beda, or Drop of White.

To listen or not to listen:  Listen! Every song is unique and worth the listen, whether or not you understand Arabic! I recommend watching the band’s music videos and looking up translations of the lyrics!
